OpenHexapod - The coolest robot ever

It really is the coolest robot ever

...is made of

Â

Body

Â

For making this robot really working, we started from an Asus EeePC, with Debian (Lenny) operating system, which provides us enough power to perform the needed tasks, and the ability to change anything related to the system settings, in order to get working networking, bluetooth, etc.Â

Â

In the same time, the EeePC has a battery which allows us to run the whole system for about 2-3 hours at full power, eliminating the need of other heavy batteries, which would make the whole robot bigger and heavier.Â

Â

Leg

Â

Now, if studied in detail, you will see that some parts are repeated. For example, the 6 legs the robot is standing on are, basically, the same.Â

Â

On each side, there is a mirrored version of the same leg on the other side. Each of them starts from an horizontal servomotor, which allows the movement around the vertical axis.Â

Â

Next to it you can see a vertical servomotor, which moves upwards and downwards the rest of the leg. In the middle of the leg, which has an 'L shape', the third servomotor, which gives the leg some extra mobility. Â

Arm

The next part you will read about is the arm. It is not a complicated part, but is giving the robot a very important functionality: seeing. It starts from a horizontal servomotor under a vertical one, enabling a very wide movement.
As you read about the feet, the arm has also an 'L shape', with another servomotor in the middle. At the very end, you can see a video camera, along some LEDs. All these give you the possibility to see what the robot is seeing, evening in a deep dark. Remember that 5-6 LEDs are enough to lighten up a 20 square meters room, in order to search things in it.
So, by having this arm, you can see things, in any condition (light, dark, fog), and you can approach them more than the whole robot can.
